The first step is to understand what you should aim for. Your main goal, especially in the beginning is to maximize your resources and create a strong, productive kingdom which older and more experienced players will not be interested in attacking. Evony is a battle game so you will have to engage in battle with other players and many will try to attack you, but as a beginner, you have an advantage. The game has a beginner protection system, which means that you cannot be attacked in the first seven days of playing unless you attack someone else or unless you upgrade your town hall to level 5. Think about how it will affect your development first. In the beginning, Lumber is the most valued resource and you should focus on building it. If you really want a force start, you can buy resources with gold or game cents.
Early in the game, this can be very lucrative. Even more important than Lumber is Time and it can be easily considered the most valuable resource. Do not waste it. Use the instant speedup option for your outdoor buildings and build up your production engine.
You will be tempted to spend your resources on defense, but that is useless in the first 7 days when nobody can attack you. Build troops and improve your wall, but focus more on building up production. One other smart thing you can do is join an alliance. After the 7-day period being part of an alliance, preferably one in the top 200, will discourage many players from attacking you and sometimes you can even get resources from other players. To get into an alliance you must contact a nearby member of that alliance and prove that you are and active, growing member.
Any Evony beginners guide will advise you to start building some defenses in the last days of your total protection period. Another good idea is not to keep huge stockpiles of resources that can be very attractive for other players with huge armies. You can hide some of your resources by making unattractive bids in the marketplace. Other players can`t see the gold you are offering (and will never be accepted as the bid is too small) and you can always get them back minus a fee. The key to being successful in this game is to be and seem active from the first day.
